Abstract
This study examines demographic, human capital, economic and business characteristics and the survival rates of self-employment, and also analyzes the factors affecting independently the survival probability of start-ups of self-employed workers after age 50, using Waves 1 to 3 of the Korean Retirement and Income Study. It is shown that business characteristics are vulnerable because of poor demographic, human capital and economic characteristics. This analysis indicates that compared to survival rate of the general self-employment population, the survival rate is lower for self-employment at older ages at a rate of 55.3% after 4 years. According the results of the logistic regression analysis, business and demographic characteristics are the major predictors while human capital characteristics have marginal influence with economic characteristics having no influence. This results suggest that startups support strategies need to focus on business and demographic characteristics rather than economic and human capital characteristics.
